Question 1

Why is my AC blowing warm air?

Accepted Answer

The most common causes are a failed run capacitor, dirty condenser coils, low refrigerant from a leak, or a tripped outdoor breaker. A contractor can usually identify which one with a single diagnostic visit — check your thermostat setting and air filter first, since a clogged filter alone can cripple cooling.

Question 2

Why is my air conditioner freezing up?

Accepted Answer

Ice on the indoor coil almost always means restricted airflow — usually a dirty filter — or low refrigerant. Turn the system to fan-only to thaw it, replace the filter, and if it freezes again, call for diagnosis. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.

Question 3

How do I know if my AC needs repair or replacement?

Accepted Answer

Consider replacement when the system is 12–15+ years old, uses phased-out refrigerant, needs frequent repairs, or can't keep up on hot days. A contractor can compare the repair scope against replacement during the same visit — call and ask for an honest assessment of both options.

Question 4

What should I check before calling for AC repair?

Accepted Answer

Confirm the thermostat is set to cool with fresh batteries, replace a dirty air filter, check that the outdoor unit has clear space around it, and verify breakers haven't tripped. If those check out and it still won't cool properly, it's time to call.

Question 5

Is a refrigerant leak dangerous?

Accepted Answer

Refrigerant leaks reduce cooling and can damage the compressor if the system keeps running low. While brief exposure in a ventilated home is rarely an emergency, leaks should be found and repaired by a licensed contractor — topping off without fixing the leak is a temporary patch.

Question 6

Do you offer free estimates for AC repair?

Accepted Answer

Many independent contractors in our network offer free estimates. Ask when you call — the contractor will explain their diagnostic and estimate process before visiting.

Question 8

How does the Texas climate affect ac repair in Lubbock?

Accepted Answer

Dallas–Fort Worth (~2,800 CDD), Houston (~3,100 CDD), San Antonio (~3,200 CDD), and Austin (~3,100 CDD) form one of the densest cooling markets on earth. Hail season and heat waves drive replacements; winter cold snaps test heat pumps. That climate is exactly why local experience matters: contractors serving Lubbock size and troubleshoot equipment for these conditions every day. Texas cities require mechanical permits for replacements; the state licenses contractors through TDLR.

Topic	Usually worth repairing	Replacement often makes more sense
System age	Under 10 years old	12–15+ years old
Failure type	Single component (capacitor, contactor, fan motor)	Failed compressor or leaking coil
History	First major issue	Repeated breakdowns in recent seasons
Refrigerant	Current refrigerant type	Phased-out refrigerant (R-22)
Performance	Cooled fine before this failure	Struggled on hot days even when running
