What size HVAC system does my home need?

Proper sizing requires a Manual J load calculation based on square footage, insulation, windows, ceiling height, and local climate — not just tonnage per square foot. Oversized systems short-cycle, waste energy, and leave humidity behind. Any contractor who sizes by rule of thumb alone is cutting corners.

How long does a full HVAC replacement take?

Most residential changeouts take one to two days: removing old equipment, setting the new condenser and air handler or furnace, connecting refrigerant lines and ductwork, then testing and commissioning. Complex ductwork modifications can extend the timeline.

What is SEER2 and does it matter?

SEER2 is the current efficiency rating standard for air conditioners and heat pumps — higher means less electricity per unit of cooling. In hot climates the savings add up fast; in mild climates the payback is slower. Your contractor can explain which efficiency tier fits your climate and usage.

Will a new system require ductwork changes?

Sometimes. Undersized, leaky, or poorly designed ductwork can cripple even a perfect new system. A thorough contractor inspects your ducts during the estimate and tells you honestly whether modifications are needed for the new equipment to perform.

Are installation estimates really free?

In-home replacement estimates are free with most independent contractors in our network. The estimate should include equipment options, scope of work, and timeline — get it in writing before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to common questions about connecting with independent local contractors.

The 50% rule is a useful starting point: if a repair approaches half the scope of a replacement and the system is past 12–15 years, replacement usually wins. Other replacement signals: phased-out refrigerant, frequent breakdowns, uneven temperatures, and rising energy bills. A contractor can assess both paths in one visit.
